North Carolina Tornado

Date: 2014
Location: Beaufort County, N.C.

In April 2014, an EF-3 tornado destroyed homes and injured more than 30 people in Beaufort County, N.C. Recognizing the magnitude of the rebuilding efforts that would be required, the Orland Park Church in Orland Park, Ill., partnered with Cimarron Construction and applied for an HBIDRF grant to work in North Carolina.

Cimarron Construction, along with other members of the SouthWest Suburban HBA and members of the Orland Park Church used the $15,000 grant to build a new home for Mike and Danielle Hunnings, whose Chocowinity home was destroyed by the tornado.

Over the course of five weeks in early 2015, 26 volunteers donated 1,125 hours to build a new home on the block pylons of the Hunnings’ former home — the only part that was left standing. Volunteers included carpenters, plumbers, painters, electricians and other skilled labor.
